Art – New Imitates Old !

Art imitates art! The quilt top on the left we created following ideas from our customer. She found inspiration in pictures of works from our portfolio. She liked the shapes and thin dark line, or sash, separating them. So we created a mashup of what she liked and secured her approval on the design created just for her. Her comment when she saw this progress photo of the sewn quilt top picture on the top: “It’s perfect.” “I really had NO idea as to how this quilt could possibly be made, so this is going to be such a treasure.” “It reminds me of a Piet Mondrian artwork.” Piet? Who? What? A search of his name brought up several of his masterpieces including the one on the right. He was a Dutch painter known for abstract art. The art on the right was created in about the 1920’s. When browsing his work there are many similarities with works we have completed such as the use of squares and rectangles separated by dark lines. I asked our customer if she was aware of the similarities before starting on her quilt. She wasn’t sure. “It’s just one of those useless pieces of information for which I am famous.” Check out what one of his works sold for at auction! .https://www.nytimes.com/…/sothebys-auction-mondrian….
