How many shirts do I need for my quilt? As many as you’d like. We have created a wall hanging quilt with 1 tshirt and a double sided quilt with 120 shirts and items on one side and 80 on the other! What we need to know is what type of quilt would you like and how many shirts or items would you like to include? We can make it any way and start by creating a design specific for your particular items.

If you’re not sure of how you want it to look, browse the styles on the home page and portfolio and save screen shots of what you like. A sketch or drawing also works!

For any style that is square based: Blocky, Close Blocky, Wonky, the overall size can be predicted in advance since all of the squares are the same size. We need to know which of your shirts has the largest graphic, words, or design. We have created a new Estimator where you can put in the quantity of items you want to include and you’ll get back a size for the quilt when it’s finished based on that quantity of items. Try it on here on Close Blocky.

For any style that is not based on squares, like Masonry, start with how many items you would like to include. We really don’t know the size until we have completed a design mockup for you based on your items. The total quantity is customizable. We do not price by bed size because of the variance in the sizes of what’s on the t-shirts. Also, unless you request a bed size, the measurements by default very seldom work out to be bed size!

You can see this in the example pictures of mockups. They are all the same size 104″ x 108″ but have a different quantity of shirts. Mockup 1 has 84 pieces. These can be shirts, patches, hat pieces, whatever you’d like to include that can be sewn down in to the quilt. For Mockup 1 the customer wanted everything to fit on one side of the quilt and didn’t care what size it was. It was mostly jerseys. Mockup 2 is 104 x 108″ the same size and has 43 items includes in the quilt. and Mockup 3 is the same size 104 x 108′. It has 32 items.. By the way 104 x 108″ is not a standard quilt or bed size!

The overall length of an adult shirt can be 22″ or longer. We may get a 6.5 – 8″ square out of a kids shirt. On an adult shirt, the overall width of the graphic/design or interesting part may be 14 – 16″. If you want your quilt to be larger, we may include the full 22″. If you want your quilt to be smaller, we may just need 11 x 14″, and will design closer around the graphic on the shirt. Math and design come in to play. We’re pretty good at both and have honed this process over 14 years of doing this to get your quilt where it needs to be.

This is through creating a custom design for you to approve. Once approved it becomes our pattern that we cut and sew from. Just like the old paper sewing patterns that you cut up to make something only we use computer-aided design. If you need your quilt to be a certain size, we’ll start the design with that in mind. If you don’t we’ll arrange your specific shirts into a design and share it with you or approval before cutting or sewing. It’s your quilt and needs to turn out exactly how you want it to!
