The Early Graduation Quilt
It was October when Mom first came to us. She needed a t-shirt quilt for graduation and wanted to make absolutely sure that we had everything we needed so that it would be finished by May. If it was done earlier, in time for Christmas, she would consider giving the graduation present to her daughter then as a Christmas gift.
Early planning is always good. To make a fully custom quilt, there is a lot time and talent devoted to getting all of the details right that are important to you. This includes the design. How do you want it to look? What fabrics would you like down to the thread and more. “Slow fashion” fits the process. It’s your quilt and need to turn out exactly as you expect.
For this one we needed a design that was appealing given that there was a lot of repetition in the school name and colors. We needed to include cornerstones, corner squares, that matched from several different pink shirts. We needed a quilting design that was not sports or school specific. We needed a personalized embroidered bottom border and also embroidery to go on the back.
Mom put a lot of thought into what she wanted for her daughter. With all of her requirements in place, we got started. It was completed in time to gift as a Christmas present which she did. Her daughter “loved it”. Gifting the finished quilt at Christmas extends the celebration to May. With Christmas taken care of, now Mom has plenty of time to come up with a May graduation present!
This style is Masonry. The repetition of the school colors and name is fine. An embroidered border was included and personal sentiment on the back. Her high school memories now designed into a special t-shirt quilt to remember the special times.

It’s just January, but if you’d like a May graduation quilt, let’s get started on it early. Early is good to have all of the details in place so that you have it when you need it. To deliver the best to you, there are no shortcuts. There are no rush orders. There are many checks and balances along the way to make sure that we’re on track and proceeding as you expect. Christmas and graduation are our 2 busiest times. There’s no firm date cut off. Forecasting completion times is based on when you need it, taking in to account other orders in progress. The closer it gets to one of these times, the busier it gets. Then I sometimes have to suggest that we can start on it, but may need a more realistic due date and completion time. We don’t want that to happen to you if you need it by a certain time.
Part of the early planning is to consider what shirts you would like to include in your quilt. Here are some tips
