Talking About Quilts

I recently accepted an invitation to talk about My Quilt Journey at Cherokee Rose Quilters in Douglasville. If was fun to talk about my passion. My talk lasted about an hour. I most enjoyed meeting everyone and answering questions ! Before I started talking there was a guild show and tell. Amazing quilts ! So much talent! That was a hard act to follow, but I managed! The group was very nice. Thanks for your hospitality.

I spoke about turning ordinary items in to something fabulous. The picture below shows some basketball jerseys that were incorporated in to a quilt for a young basketball player. Fabric selection, in this case the basketball fabric, helped to personalize the quilt and make it really special.

The dog collars were part of a memory quilt for a special puppy that passed. We incorporated as much as we could of the puppy’s everyday items: toys, blankies, stuffed animals, and the ribbon parts of the collars.

I welcome additional opportunities to share what I know and hone my speaking skills, If you have speaker needs in the area of custom quilts such as the joy of creating for others, the business side, and how to turn your hobby in to a business. I know a little bit about all of those and am more than happy to help!

If you’re thinking about going in to business, it means to take a risk, but don’t let go of your dream. If the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count 😊!

Thanks also to https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=executive%20toastmasters for all of the support and Sarah and Ralf for help at the event.

Help Finishing your Quilt

Here’s Ava cuddling with her puppy. She knew the quilt was coming. Mom, Tina, had actually started it a long time ago, sewed all of the t-shirts together but needed help finishing it. She had hand sewn “old fashioned” hand ties over the quilt to hold the layers together. She was ok with us removing them in order to long arm quilt it. That’s because for long arm quilting the layers are loaded separately, one at a time on the long arm quilting machine. We added the all over simple quilting, meander, that she picked out and finished the edges with a separate binding in the same fabric that she used for the back.

In the end, Mom was glad it was done and daughter Ava “loves her quilt” – a graduation present.

You may have a similar need. There can often be more to finishing a t-shirt quilt than is anticipated at the outset. It seems simple enough. After all we all have tons of t-shirts, right! What could possibly go wrong?

Congratulations if you’ve tackled making your own t-shirt quilt and got this far or completed it. One of the most challenging parts to making your own t-shirt quilt even for a simple design like this is working with the actual t-shirts.

T-shirts are knits or often have a knit content. You may have some that are 100% polyester or some that are a blend of different fabrics. The challenge with knits is that as soon as you cut the shirt the edges curl. Now how do you sew shirt edges together that are curled. It’s not impossible; but, without interfacing, more time is needed to pin and straighten the edges all the way around the shirt before sewing and before long arm quilting.

What is interfacing? It’s a special fabric that is either sewn or ironed on to the t-shirt fabric to keep the edges nice and straight. We like t-shirts because they stretch and have some “give” with our activities. However, when you cut them to make something else out of them like a quilt, that stretch that we otherwise like can make you want to cuss!

If you’re making a t-shirt quilt, consider what’s important – spending the time to cut, pin and straighten each shirt before sewing them together or spending the time, plus the expense of interfacing to end up with a nice straight edge for sewing and no curls. Your choice. Like a lot of things in life, it can boil down to time or money! Tina’s quilt didn’t have interfacing, so we did the heavy lifting wrestling with the curls at quilting time.

One of the big advantages of interfacing is that the sewn edges end up nice and straight making for a nice appearance. The drawback is it adds expense to your quilt and more time to sew or iron it on to your t-shirts. There are several weights of interfacing from super light to heavy depending upon the end results that you’d like, light and supple or heavy. If you’re hot natured you may prefer a lighter quilt. If you’re cold natured you may want something heavier. Interfacing, batting, and fabrics choices all come together to make up the weight of a quilt.

Tina had excess fabric from her back, the 3rd layer, and planned to fold down the edges of it to make a “fold-over” binding. A fold over binding is thought to be faster. Not necessarily. If the middle layer, the batting has actually been included, the excess batting has to be trimmed off first. For best appearance, the back of the quilt is trimmed and straighted all the way around before being folded over to the front side to cover the raw edges. After being folded over it’s pinned all the way around through all layers so that it can be sewn. Then it’s sewn. Lots of technicalities to consider to completely finish your own quilt.

There is a lot of pride in finishing everything yourself if you have the time and talent. If you have both, it’s extremely rewarding to be able to say. I did it myself !

A separate finished binding is the professional way to finish a quilt. In this instance it did cost a little more, but we were able to lighten Tina’s load and finish her quilt, professionally, for her daughter’s graduation gift.

Tina was ok with me sharing her story. Otherwise, if you need help, we’re here for you.

No one has to know!

Green Bay Packers Quilted for the win!

This one’s not quilted. Yet. Can you tell?

Maybe you can’t. But the truth is that Green Bay fans you likely don’t really care. You just want Green Bay to win. Right?

“If winning isn’t everything, why do they keep score? – Vince Lombardi

You look at this picture and notice the player. His uniform. His muscles. His movements. Locked in on his receiver, he’s getting ready to throw for a touchdown. Go team.

Random thoughts: is there really a player 00? I didn’t see on the roster. In this picture, it looks like 2 of the guys in the background are left handed.

Regardless, what’s important is that this is art that was professionally made. This art has been repurposed to be a part of a fabulous quilt and included for present and future generations to admire.

The moral of the story is that if you’re a sports fan you, too, probably have a lot of jerseys; a lot of t-shirts; a lot of fabric memorabilia that you’ve collected all over the years. This is something you can do and make something amazing to take to the games or gift as a present like this one.

We can help. With 77 years of quilting experience we know a little bit about creating quilts, and we want a touchdown every time.

Now back to the original question is it quilted?

Here, yes. It’s quilted. Quilting is the decorative stitching that goes through all layers of the quilt in the design of your choice, in the thread of your choice. Hearts here to show some Packer love.

“Teamwork is what the Green Bay Packers were all about. They didn’t do it for the individual glory. They did it because they loved one another. – Vince Lombardi

The design is hearts, but it could also be footballs. The thread is silver, but it can be any color that you like. Quilting makes it a quilt.

” Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” – Vince Lombardi

Come on and go with us. We’re going for the goal!

Road Trip ! Don’t forget the quilt!

If you’re traveling this holiday season, we wish you safe travels.

Don’t forget the quilt ! It’s great for snuggling up with the memories as you travel through different climates. If you’re heading north, that special quilt can add warmth going in to the colder areas especially if there’s snow! Going down south you may still need it in the car if your better half has the air cranked all the way up!

Stopping for a break on the way, our quilts are fully washable. It’s fine to lay your quilt out on the ground and have an impromptu picnic without having to worry about spills or scuffs. If needed, when you’re ready just throw it in a large non-agitating machine, delicate with cold water, mild detergent, and tumble dry on low heat and you’re good to go!

It’s also great for the beach and can be a conversation starter with other beachgoers as they admire your masterpiece and want to know more of the story. Then, when beach time is over, just shake off the sand and hang it to dry if you have a place. We were actually at a motel once that had a clothesline that we used for just this purpose. If you’re in a car and it’s still a little damp, you can also drape it across the inside of the car at nighttime.

Yes, take it to the outdoor concert. You’re prepared if it gets cool. You now have “seating” and don’t need chairs. Your t-shirt quilt can be a great conversation starter with others also attending the concert.

Another reason to take your quilt on a road trip, maybe you’re spending the night in a hotel and it’s time for bed. Your better half likes it cold and you like it warm. The quilt can provide that extra layer for you and avert a late night argument and help you get some sleep.

This is a Harley t-shirt quilt that we made for a customer from shirts saved from their biker travels around the world. If you collect, over time you’ll have all of the raw materials needed to make an amazing quilt. Call us when you’re ready 678-324-8084.

If you have a zillion shirts, like a lot of bikers, the hard part can then be narrowing it down just what to include in the quilt. It helps to go through and mark the sides you want “in” with a safety pin. I smile when people come in with a big bag and think they have too many t-shirts. The most we’ve included on one side of a quilt was in the vicinity of 110 shirts for a cheerleader! Plus, the back was more cheerleading t-shirts. If, however, you want to take the quilt on the bike you may have to scale down to a quilt made from 10 or so shirts and save the rest for a big quilt !

I personally love road trips and being able to stop, see the country, and explore along the way. In my dreams we’re in a big RV with a sewing machine in the back!

Safe travels if you’re driving. If the quilt won’t fit on the bike, you just may have to take the sportscar!

Just don’t forget to put it inside the trunk !

Quilts for Veterans

military quilt

This quilt was made for a Marine veteran entirely from his uniforms. He put some thought in to how he wanted it to look and created a mockup on the computer.  We started with this  and arranged the khakis, dress coats, and hats following his design. These all made the top of the quilt. The back is a soft minky. Minky is 100% polyester and popular because of the softness of it. It also comes in a lot of colors.

The quilting holds all 3 layers together. This design is very elegant done in gold thread with a regal eagle repeated across the quilt. He wanted the red as the binding to add a pop of color so that goes all around the outside edge and shows on both sides. The binding seals the raw edges after the quilting is finished giving the quilt a clean edge. It shows on both sides and is an opportunity to add a pop of color, like red, if desired.

Also in progress an army quilt in memory of a son that unfortunately lost his life to violence at home in the U.S. This was commissioned by the Mom of the service man in his memory. The quilting on this one is hearts.

The Algiers Marine pic is part of a quilt in progress. There are so many interesting fabrics, patterns, and textures on this one from his travels while working for the American embassies abroad. We’ll be sure to post the finished picture.

Thank you all veterans for your service protecting our country and our freedom around the globe. We appreciate you so very much.

Family Stories through Fabric

A variety of items can be included in a quilt: clothes, purchased fabric, stuffed animals, and of course t-shirts. Such is the case with the quilts we made for Chris. Over time we were fortunate enough to be selected to create six quilts for her family.

I received an extensive thank you from Chris after the last project and would like to share her comments about working with us in her own words.

There is no doubt about it – Kyle is a quilt artist! It’s obvious she loves what she does because she pours so much of herself into it! I’ve worked with Kyle and her talented staff at Just T-Shirt Quilts to make three personalized full-sized quilts so far – one King and two Queens. Kyle made the first one for me over five years ago, on the occasion of my oldest child’s 25th Christmas. Never one to throw away anything with sentimental value, I had quite the collection of sports, school, and favorite articles of clothing from birth through college to first real job for my three children, so I thought, “Ok, for the Christmas after their 25th birthday, I will give them each a quilt made from things they wore spanning the first quarter century of their lives.” And that is what I did for two of the three children (the third was very particular about what he wanted on his quilt).

While the t-shirts were the heart of the quilt, Kyle added so, so much more, like part of a favorite costume, the badges from scouting, a baby bib, the pockets from sorority t-shirts. She even took the stuffing out of a treasured childhood stuffed animal, resized it and made it the centerpiece of a quilt! For the third quilt, its to-be owner had a special request – while he couldn’t see the finished product until Christmas, he wanted his quilt to be made from the school-specific fraternity and football t-shirts he had acquired in college. Kyle added so many extra touches, like taking the pockets off 14 t-shirts and sewing them into the border patches and using school colors and iconic herring bone fabric for the sashing. The quilt turned out beautifully.

Before meeting Kyle, I had no idea how much work goes into making a patchwork quilt. Hours and hours, sizing, cutting, ironing, trimming, sewing, the sashing, the binding, the backing, the thread, the long arm quilting pattern, to name just a few.(And a shout out to Adrianna, Cheryl, Dora, Emily, Katrina, and Sarah of Just T-Shirt Quilts for all their hard work on the most recent quilt!) Kyle pays close attention to every detail. She is meticulous and helps you make the right color and design decisions along the way – for the quilt that had the mountain sashing, we went with an abstract mountain quilting pattern; for the patchwork quilt that was a jumble of a million things, we went with a puzzle piece quilting pattern; for the college-themed quilt, we went with a wave pattern (you guessed it! Roll Tide!).

Kyle doesn’t make quilts, she makes heirlooms.

I happened to see Chris recently one weekend. It was a nice day and my husband and I were out for a weekend walk on one of the local trails. Two ladies are walking toward us. I look more closely. Wait, I know her. “Kyle”, she says. “Chris”. I smiled as I thought of our relationship through making quilts. Choosing the items, design, fabrics and more that the recipient would most appreciate all took time. This is what I remember and how I know Chris. It was great to bump in to her and meet her friend and walking partner. Making a quilt links us. Through the personal items included I got to know a lot about Chris, her family and also her profession–attorney.

Here’s more that Chris wrote about the first three quilts that we created for her from her in laws clothing. They are no longer here, but their clothes and the stories live on!

I would be remiss if I did not also mention the three patchwork throw/lap sized quilts Kyle made for me. I was blessed to have the best in-laws ever and when they passed within a short time of each other, I wanted to create something tangible as a way for my husband, his brother, his sister, and all our families to remember them. I gave Kyle a pile of shirts, robes, and bed clothes Grammy and Papa had worn and, working her magic, Kyle created a mosaic of memories. I remember Papa so vividly when I see a triangle of his favorite LL Bean red checkered shirt; I remember how much Grammy loved soft jersey when I touch a patch from her pajamas. Best of all (and at Kyle’s suggestion), a picture of Grammy and Papa is sewn into a “frame” at the center of the quilt. Finally, and as a special tribute at my request, Kyle gave each quilt its own unique embroidered “symbol” representing something special in that sibling’s relationship with his or her parents. For my husband, it is a Christmas tree because he and his parents truly loved everything about Christmas. Kyle helped me pick out the perfect quilting pattern — swirling double hearts, a tribute to their 63 years of marriage. The pattern shows up beautifully on the soft minky side of the quilt. The quilts are incredibly well made, with the most careful attention paid to every detail. My husband and his siblings have told me often how much they love their memory quilts. I do, too. Thank you, Kyle the Quilter!

Feedback means a lot. For professional reasons, professionals often don’t write public reviews or aren’t even on social media. So for her taking the time to write this, it’s so meaningful, and I greatly appreciate it. I have her comments printed out on the shop wall. Whenever I have down days I read it and it always brings me back to a happier place, why I’m doing this, and the special people I meet in the process. Thanks Chris for your business, through which, you have so positively touched my life!
