Virginia Highlands Summerfest

June 3 and June 4 we’ll be at the Virginia Highlands Summerfest.   More details here https://vahi.org/summerfest/events   Come on out and share your vision!  We’ll also have our Big Bags. They’re HUGE…big enough to hold up to a Cali King quilt or 3 18″ pillows!  Take your pick of black or blue free with your finished quilt or gift card purchase of $50.

Wide Backs

We now have a small selection of solid wide back fabrics available in house.  The wide back is used to cover the back of your quilt if we are making a t-shirt or other custom quilt for you. For t-shirt quilts, the price is already included in the base price so if  you’d like one of these you just pick out a color and let us know. If you have made your own quilt, Studio E 108″ premium cotton backs are available for $15.98/yd when we are providing digital or free motion  long arm quilting for you.

Race Numbers

If you have race numbers, you could make a quilt out of just the numbers if you want.   We take the time to prepare them professionally so that they won’t fade or bleed; and, once sewn into your quilt will last a long, long time.  The shirts earned from running all these races, plus the race numbers, will be going into a very memorable running quilt — with 2 more just like it to follow.  (She runs A LOT!)   Actually, in addition to the race numbers and the shirts, we can include anything else we can sew down — patches, hats, windbreakers.  It’s a great way to preserve all of your memories!   Also makes a thoughtful gift for children or family members that run, too!

Heart Strings

This is baby Kameron on one of 3 quilts made for Mom.

Such a joy to be around. Here Kameron reached a baby milestone having just learned to roll from front to back and front again.  She repeats it over and over. Each time giggling. As if she can’t believe she did it.

Mom and Dad are no longer together.   Though divorced, Mom unselfishly cared enough to create the memory quilt. Baby girl will know Dad’s in the Army. He’s athletic. He plays basketball and loves the Oklahoma City Thunder.

She’ll outgrow the baby clothes.  The memory quilt… she’ll grow in to. It will last a long time.

Just want to hug her in it and not give her back.  She continues to tug at my heart strings.

Thanks Tawanda.  What’s your vision?

Here you can also see the back of the quilt which is a yellow super, soft minky fabric. The binding is the thin strip of blue. Right behind baby to the right you can see where an actual part of the uniform was used in the quilt. We left the ties, zipper, and velcro for play and practicing fine motor skills!

Mud, Sweat, Beer

Hot.  Muddy. Sweaty hard work.

It all made for great pictures of Eric and his daughter doing something they really enjoy together– being active outdoors.   Like mud races and obstacle courses!  Jumping through fire, pulling weights, up, down, through and around obstacles.  Getting downright muddy, dirty in the process while spending father-daughter time together.

It was a pleasure to work so closely with Eric to create this quilt commemorating their adventures. The fabrics he picked — all outdoorsy, muddy boot prints, camouflage including the tan below that was used on the back. His stitch pattern, barbed wire, spaced just how he wanted it. The same photo of his daughter was also specially prepared so that it could be included in the quilt, too.

The memories all woven together.  The t-shirts now will continue to talk. Telling the story over and over and over again about muddy times together.

So happy we made it to the finish line.

As I listen from my couch.

Did someone say beer?

Sailing Takes Me Away

It’s dark. I knock. The door slowly opens. It’s Tom. I’m greeted with a smile.

“We have to stop meeting like this”, he grins.

“  No”, I protest.  “I’m actually enjoying this”.

I’ve made a house call to deliver the final masterpiece to Tom. I enter the house.  I open the bag. The best smile is the one when he sees his quilt.

Last visit he had joked about making a quilt with arm sleeves like a wing suit like I’ve seen cliff divers wear on TV. In a wing suit he could fly to his North Georgia lake house instead of drive.

The smile means (whew!) he’s not disappointed it’s a regular quilt. Not a wing suit.

“I trust you.” Says Tom.

Tom is 88 years old. He likes traveling, going to his lake house—he drives there; and he likes making model ships.  Tom likes sailboats so the quilting pattern is sailboats. The front and back of this quilt was made entirely from his sweatshirts.

We worked with Tom to make a special quilt from his sweatshirt collection. It’s special because it’s all about his life. It’s special because Tom can use it NOW to keep warm by the fire at his lake house.  Special because Tom’s great grandchildren can also enjoy his quilt.  Later.

Tom tilts his head.  There’s a twinkle in his eye as he looks off into the distance “I just realized”  he sighs  “that I may not live forever”.

“The quilt will outlast me”.  He smiles.

Give the gift of different. It’s special.

For you now.

For them. Later.

This was quilt #4 for Tom and partner Sonja.

Expect great things

Thinking about a t-shirt quilt?  Here are 10 good reasons to bring your t-shirts to us:

1. Teamwork – You’re hiring a team. You could have one hobbyist alone make your t-shirt quilt; but imagine for your money you have an entire professional team with all of the skills and talent that go into making your t-shirt quilt. With our small but dedicated team of perfectionists, creatives, and technicians you get the best person with the best skill: machine sewing, hand sewing, prep, quilting, design, and service.  We then collaborate using an interdisciplinary approach to deliver the best results possible.

2. Assessment- we start by listening closely and doing a thorough assessment of what your vision is.  Once crystal clear, we then manage that throughout 20 checkpoints along the way. This  includes a “final pause” or in surgery it’s also called a timeout. It’s a brief break to reflect before a major event such as cutting takes place. We want to make sure everything is in order every step of the way throughout the creation of your quilt.

3. Choices – We’ll lead you through all of the decision making from overall style down to the thread. The details matter. Consider there are no limits in our need to satisfy your wishes.

4. Versatility – Our quilts are reversible. The front can be the back and the back can be the front. You may want to change the look of your room, and it’s as easy as just turning your quilt over to the other side.

5. Variety – We make many types of quilts such as Remember Me quilts, double-sided quilts; quilts made entirely from clothes  – if you have had someone pass bring the clothes of your loved one and we’ll  make something special from their clothes to remember them by. Bring us a picture if you’ve seen something you like.

6. Design – We create a pattern for every single quilt. Each one is unique. Like art!

7. Details  – For instance, all of our bindings are hand sewn. The binding is the outermost edge of the quilt. We could do them by machine, but hand bindings allow us to create an invisible finish that provides a very polished look and professional appearance.

8.Creativity – We can create just about any type of quilt you can imagine. We’re not afraid to try something new and enjoy the challenge and chance to make you happy.

9. Technology – We make an ongoing investment in technology — Software, hardware, and specialized equipment — to help achieve top notch results. We own our computerized long arm and therefore have maximum control over a real important step—the quilting. Quilting is what makes a quilt a quilt. The result is a consistent professional look that you can be proud of.

10. Respect – We respect your privacy and won’t harass you for reviews, likes, and social interaction. We don’t have a mailing list so you won’t get harassing emails from Just T-Shirt Quilts. Referrals have been the cornerstone of our success and growth. Referrals mean a lot. We’ll work hard to make you happy so that we can earn them.

You now  have 10 good reasons to come to Just T-Shirt Quilts. We would be honored to have your business and will work really hard to deliver a quality quilt that will last a long time that you can be proud of.

Expect great things and great things happen!

We want your overall experience to be just as memorable… as your t-shirt quilt!

Be Nice and Always Do Your Best

Be nice and always do your very best. You just never know who may be paying attention. Here’s my story!

*****

Angie always looked like a million bucks when I saw her. She was beautiful, well dressed and everything hair, clothes, just always seemed to be so perfectly in place.  I would look at myself in the mirror before she came by. Do I look ok? I’d ask myself.  Do I need to comb my hair or put on makeup?  Angie traveled a lot. She must have a travel job.  The last place she emailed me from was in Phoenix. We talked about the weather.

Angie’s t-shirt quilt was for her son’s graduation. She came by to pick it up. She’d had a hectic week of travel. She was wearing a red and black Atlanta Falcons shirt and cap. I see the beginnings of a smile before she leaves. Didn’t want you to treat me any different, Kyle, but just want you to know that “Arthur and I are engaged”. Arthur, I thought.  “By the way Debi, his office manager, may be contacting you for a t-shirt quilt. We wanted to see how this one turned out first”.

Ring, ring.  About a month later, I’m driving. It’s an “unknown” call.  Can’t they use caller ID like everybody else? Geesh.  Must be a salesperson. Should I answer this? Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes. I pull over.  It’s Debi, the office manager.  She wants a t-shirt quilt. I need it by the 12th for her birthday. We’re going to “the ranch”, says Debi. “Her” is Arthur’s daughter.

Debi comes by with the t-shirts for the birthday quilt. She also has another t-shirt quilt that someone else made that she wants some work done on. A new quilt and an “old” quilt upgrade. Let’s do this.

We did.  The birthday quilt was finished on time.  Debi sends someone to pick it up. After another “unknown” call an Amazonian-looking gorgeous natural blond comes to pick up the quilt. She had no makeup on. She was probably 6-feet tall. Long natural platinum blond hair. She must be a model I thought.  Now I’m really feeling self conscious. She says thanks, picks up the quilt and glides out the door.

I was in a beauty pageant when I was 17. She made me think of the other contestants I was surrounded by.  Beauty that makes another woman stare.  She was that beautiful.

Those thoughts all came back to me last night. I’m a nurse and work at the hospital 2 days a week. While at the hospital at the end of my shift I went to attend an all-employee town hall meeting.  At the end of the meeting they’re calling numbers for door prizes. I never win anything. I keep looking at my ticket as they’re calling numbers. They call my number. I look at my ticket again to be sure and approach the podium. The executive VP is giving out the prizes. “Are you a Falcons fan” she asks?  There’s only one right answer to this one, I thought.  “Of course”. I said. She hands me my prize: a nice red Falcons t-shirt.  I smile.  I love red, and I actually won something. Best is that as my hospital is now sponsoring the Falcons, which means I can also wear the Falcons shirt to work. Nice.

Back to the story so the “old” quilt upgrade that came from Debi was done. This involved replacing some t-shirts (for Arthur) on a double-sided t-shirt quilt that someone else made. The reason being that some of the t-shirts were heavily painted. Paint on t-shirts— in some cases is how the art is applied. Looks pretty, but against your skin it can be somewhat abrasive and not real comfortable.  After a thorough workup and test we came up with a plan that included unquilting, and then a lot of hand-sewing to put things back together. The upgrades left the t-shirt quilt in a more useable condition than we received it. The job was done. I had already received a check in an envelope with his name on it for full payment.

When it was time to pick up the upgrade another congenial, beautiful brunette came by. I bet his office is full of beautiful people I thought.

For now the work was all finished. His daughter loved her birthday quilt. He was happy with the upgrade. Thrilled at the mention of #3 now also likely coming our way.

He is the owner of the Atlanta Falcons. He is co-founder of Home Depot.  He is the owner of the new Atlanta United pro soccer team. He, Arthur, is Arthur Blank !

Be nice and always do your best. You just never know who is paying attention.

Thanks Angie and Debi for choosing Just T-Shirt Quilts

Road Trip

Aaahh a soft, supple quilt.  It drapes and hugs back. It’s made out of your t-shirts.  Just how you wanted it.  It’s great to take on your road trip and snuggle up for the car ride. Use it for a picnic or outing along the way.  Bundle up in the hotel — instead of fighting over the air.  Take it to the campground.

You drive.  Let us steer you through the highways.

There are lots of roads to take to make it special  We’ll help you pick the ones to get it just right, and just how you want it. Such as what thread to use: “Cornbread” or “Electric yellow”! Cornbread won out for Karen’s quilt along with bright yellow flowers and super soft cuddly fabrics. All the main ingredients needed to make a special quilt for her daughter.  She actually had given up. It had been promised for so long; but, with Karen’s help, we made her daughter’s dream come true.

Let us do this for you. We work hard on the details to get things as close to perfect as we can get it. Be picky!  Karen’s quilt was completed just how she wanted it.  An exec at a healthcare company–the details mattered a lot!  The proof:  114 emails and 5 phone calls later, it’s done. Best part, her daughter’s happy. “She loves it” and  we received a special “thanks so much for your attention to detail”.  What’s your vision?   “
